Ahead of the eagerly anticipated Netball World Cup tournament to be staged for the first time in South Africa, national team coach Norma Plummer has announced her final squad.
The country’s governing body, Netball South Africa (NSA) unveiled the 15-member squad on Friday and it will be led by skipper Bongiwe Msomi.
The global showpiece will be staged in Cape Town in July and August this year and the coach Norma Plummer has taken her South African-based troops through their paces on an intensive camp but had to break due to the Telkom Netball League (TNL).
Entertainment SA Sport understands that the team assembled at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sports (SAS) since 2022 as they worked under the guidance of the veteran Australian coach.
“We have been in camp since May 7 and I believe we have worked very hard with the players at our disposal,” said Plummer.
Additionally, Plummer said they worked on a number of technical and tactical aspects of the game as she put to the players and at their game.
According to NSA president Cecilia Molokwane, she said this will be for the first time in 60 years that a Netball World Cup is hosted on African soil.
She said their expectation is for a podium finish as hosts which is a fair one.
“We can’t host and become spectators in our own backyard — we need to make sure that South Africa and other African countries make it to the podium come August 6,” she said.
Meanwhile, the tournament will be played at the iconic Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
