OFFICIAL: Long-serving defender Erick Mathoho leaving Kaizer Chiefs

Veteran Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho is leaving the club at the end of his contract in June and that development is confirmed by her agent.

Basia Michaels says they sat down with Chiefs and the best solution was to amicably go their separate ways as his client wants to further his football career.

Together with goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, Mathoho is the club’s longest-serving player and his future will be decided in the next few months.

The 33-year-old central defender only featured once for Amakhosi this current season and could play his final match for the club on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to the SABC, Michaels confirmed that they have held extensive negotiations with the Chiefs bosses over Mathoho’s situation at the club but they could not find any common ground.

“We have been in discussion with Chiefs and based on the lack of game time and Tower’s age. He would like to end his career playing football,” said Michaels.

“And that’s probably the biggest deciding factor. We have had extensive and professional conversations with the senior management… And from those conversations, we can clearly see a future away from Naturena with Tower playing football for the next three years or so.”

The FIFA-accredited football agent added that the decision can’t be tied down to it being solely Chiefs’ decision but they have had suitors for the defender also known as Tower.

While she could not divulge the possible suitors, she said they have a few options but she respected football processes and that would definitely be Mathoho’s next club to announce the deal.

Under coach Arthur Zwane, Amakhosi will meet Cape Town City in their last DStv Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
