As we are now living in the digital era, most people prefer and find comfort in building relationships with people they meet online. It is great to know that technology has now offered many ways for people to keep in touch and even reach out, whether you are on the other side of the world or not, all we know is that it is no longer difficult as it once was before. But as convenient and exciting as it seems, the reality is that it can be really dangerous. So if you’re interested in meeting someone online, here are a few things to remember.
Fake accounts
Not everyone has good intentions on the internet hence there is cyber bullying and it sometimes results in some people taking their own lives. Most people around the world are not showcasing their true identity, hence you might find out at a later stage that you were actually chatting or building a relationship with someone who was using a fake account (which means they were using someone else’s identity, that includes pictures or videos of that person). Not only will you be disappointed that the love of your life is really not Usher or Beyonce, but you might also feel betrayed and have to deal with a broken heart.
Scams
In the cyber world, what you need to fully understand is that it is honestly an “ every man for himself” situation which means that there is no guarantee of online safety and security. In as much as you can think and feel like you can trust your online partner, you may also be a victim of scamming and identity theft. Which is highly advisable that even though you have fallen deeply for someone online, don’t give them your personal details like bank account details, home address, ID number, personal pictures or anything else that gives someone personal access to your life
If you decide to meet up with a new friend or partner you met online, here are tips for doing so safely:
- Always meet in a public place
- Always tell someone where you’re going and who you’re meeting with
- Never leave your drink unattended because you risk being spiked
- Always ask a friend or an adult to go with you.
