Court orders Parlux Fragrances to pay Jay-Z $6.8 Million in royalties

After a long-running legal battle with fragrance company Parlux, Jay-Z has finally won what he’s owed. Back in 2012, the rapper signed a deal with the fragrance company to create a line called Gold Jay-Z.

At first, the fragrance made great sales, but it didn’t take long before the product line to start failing, and that’s when Parlux took Jay-Z to court, alleging that they were not making it because of the rapper’s failure to honour promotional obligations.

The obligations included the 2014 launch event at Macy’s and promoting the product on Good Morning America, and the lawsuit included allegations of Jay-Z keeping a $20,000 prototype bottle after rejecting its design for use on the line.

The fragrance line wanted $68 million judgment in 2016, however they were met with a countersuit for royalties owed, which were about $4.5 million. Jay-Z’s countersuit also alleged that Parlux Fragrances gave him the wrong documentation on their financial health. As a result, the company struggled to pay royalties they owed to the artist.

The trial lasted about three weeks back in 2021, where a jury found Jay-Z not guilty of owing the fragrance company anything. Then in 2022 February, the appeals court ruled that Parlux should be on the hook for royalty payments to Mr Carter. “The record is clear: Parlux sold licensed products after July 31, 2015 but failed to pay royalties on those sales.”

Despite its claims, Parlux continued to sell the Gold Jay-Z fragrance into 2017, therefore New York Supreme Court Justice Andrew Borrok ruled that the company must pay $6.8 million in unpaid royalties and interest. They have the right to file an appeal in this case, but have not done so yet.

Jay-Z’s lawyer Alex Spiro said: “We’ve been awarded and will be receiving the money as we should,”
