DERICK HOUGAARD AWAKE RESPONDING TO DOCTORS AFTER ALMOST TWO WEEKS IN A COMA

There was positive news on Thursday as it was confirmed that Derick Hougaard, the former Springbok flyhalf who has been battling respiratory pneumonia in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, has taken a significant step towards recovery.

Hougaard’s partner, singer Nádine, took to Facebook to share the encouraging update. She stated that Hougaard had opened his eyes and was responsive to the medical staff’s interventions. Furthermore, she mentioned that both the infection count and the carbon dioxide levels in his blood had decreased.

Although Hougaard still had other complications requiring treatment, he remained unable to speak due to the presence of tubes in his throat. Nádine expressed her gratitude to everyone who has shown their support during this challenging time.

The 40-year-old Hougaard was admitted to the hospital on the previous Saturday, which was 13 days ago. Throughout his career, Hougaard played more than 100 matches for the Bulls between 2002 and 2008. He also had playing stints with Leicester (2008-2009) and Saracens (2009-2012).

Furthermore, he represented the Springboks in eight Test matches and was part of the 2003 World Cup squad, which reached the quarter-finals of that year’s prestigious tournament.
