Former Banyana Captain’s sister Lindiwe burnt with petrol by partner

The former Banyana Banyana captain Khabo Zitha is still in shock as her sister, Lindiwe Zitha is fighting for her life in ICU after being burnt beyond recognition by her boyfriend.

Reports say that the incident happened in Mamelodi east when the 55-year-old accused poured petrol over Lindiwe and set her alight. Zitha is currently at a hospital in Pretoria where she was admitted to the ICU in critical condition, and is on life support.

The victim’s sister and family spokesperson, Khabo Zitha, revealed that the accused was arrested the following day when he was found seeking help at a local clinic after suffering serious burns to his hands.

Khabo said the accused threatened to kill Lindiwe on several occasions and sometimes forced her to sleep over and demanded money from her. She also mentioned that the accused also tried to set cars outside the house alight before he fled the scene.

“My sister ran to the other room and her son who was trying to put out the fire also suffered serious burns on his hands,” said Zitha. A neighbour came to Lindiwe’s rescue and rushed her to the hospital.

Khabo revealed that there is no part of her sister’s body that is not burnt. “She has not woken up since she was admitted on Saturday. She’s in a coma. She’s had countless operations for skin grafting and eye restoration. Every day the hospital calls to inform us about a procedure they have to make. It’s really bad.

“Her eyes are burnt from the inside. Her condition is bad and has left us distraught”.

Confirmed by the Gauteng police spokesperson Col Mavela Masondo, the accused, Eric Marakalala, was arrested for attempted murder and appeared in court for the first time on Monday the 5th June.
