South Africa had hoped to host the Formula One grand prix race in the near future. It is reported that the country has lost its bid to host the car racing event due to its political ties to Russia.
It was reported last year that South Africa lost its hosting bid when promoter Warren Scheckter and Formula One broke down over financial details.
Speaking to BusinessLIVE, Scheckter said, “I have seen some of the reports put out, with most of the information being incorrect. Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to provide detail, but there will be no 2023 South African Grand Prix.”
It was said that the country will host the Grand Prix in 2024 with a sports investment company based in Miami 777 taking over the promotion of the event.
According to racingnews365, the plans and decisions made have been abandoned due to political alignments.
“According to sources, the decision was taken because SA has aligned closely with Russia,” said racingnews365.
“Formula One would not comment on the rumours, but the decision will likely provide Spa-Francorchamps a reprieve and see the Belgian Grand Prix remain on the calendar for at least another year.”
Last year Formula One also scrapped the Russian Grand Prix following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion announced that he would like to race in South Africa.
