Former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs will not face a retrial over domestic violence claims as the charges against him have been withdrawn by prosecutors. The decision was made due to the unwillingness of his ex-girlfriend, Kate Greville, to give evidence. Giggs, who is now 49 years old, was scheduled to go on trial for a second time on July 31, after the initial trial ended without a verdict being reached. However, the prosecuting lawyer, Peter Wright, informed the Manchester Crown Court that there was no realistic chance of conviction.
Greville had indicated that she did not want to give evidence, citing the toll that the first trial had taken on her and her sister Emma. In response to the prosecution’s announcement, Judge Hilary Manley entered formal not guilty verdicts for the charges against Giggs. The allegations against him included controlling and coercive behaviour against Greville, as well as assaulting her and her younger sister. If convicted, Giggs could have faced a five-year jail term, but he has now been cleared of all charges.
During the trial in August of the previous year, several individuals, including former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, provided evidence. Giggs himself took the stand and admitted to being unfaithful in his past romantic relationships but denied ever being violent. Following his arrest, Giggs had been on leave from his position as the Wales manager and eventually resigned in June of the same year.
Ryan Giggs rose to prominence as a young player in the mid-1990s and enjoyed a highly successful career at Manchester United. By the time he retired, he held the record for being the most decorated player in English football history.
As a player, he made a club record 963 appearances over 23 years for Manchester United, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies.
He began his coaching career at Old Trafford, taking temporary charge at the end of the 2013-14 season after David Moyes was sacked. Giggs then worked as an assistant to Louis van Gaal for two years.
