Kelly Khumalo apologises for rant on X

Drama erupted at the 29th South African Music Awards (SAMAs) when Kelly Khumalo lost out on the Female Artist of the Year award to gospel singer Ntokozo Mbambo. And then the Tweets followed.

“You guys know the truth. Numbers never lie. Call me Emaweni (title of her latest album),” Kelly boldly said in one post on X, telling everyone she’s the real deal, award or not.

She then continued on her rant: “Arranged winnings FUSEG!… I’m not scared of all of you FUSEG! FUSEG NONKE.”

Khumalo did not take her loss gracefully, lashing out at the awards and dragging Gospel singer Ntokozo Mbambo’s win into the mix on social media. The heated online exchanges turned ugly at times to the point where Khumalo insulted the LGBTQIA+ community.

When Khumalo made homophobic comments amidst the debate, fans and friends called her out instantly. She was forced to apologize, acknowledging the remarks were uncalled for.

“Ngonile with my homophobic remarks ngiyaxolisa that was uncalled for”, said Khumalo in a Tweet.

Some users took Khumalo’s anger as a sign that she could finally tell the country who pulled the trigger in the Senzo Meyiwa trial, shedding light on a case that has become a trial within a trial.

Khumalo is known for being unfiltered, but crossed a line with her SAMAs outburst. However, her fans held her accountable, prompting the singer to take back the offensive insults and admit fault.

The controversy illustrates how awards show defeats can stir bitter reactions from disappointed artists on social media. Khumalo’s followers showed that discriminatory comments will not be allowed, regardless of who you are.
