Must-watch trailer: cheerleaders are turning up dead in Trompoppie

Expanding on the triumphs of Spinners, the inaugural African series chosen for CanneSeries, and the recent accolades for Best Director at the 2023 SAFTA awards with Donkerbos, Showmax has just unveiled the trailer for its latest Afrikaans series, Trompoppie, set to premiere on December 7, 2023, with subsequent episodes airing every Thursday until February 8, 2024.

The narrative revolves around Luna, a gifted gymnast who finds herself in the competitive realm of elite drum majorettes, known as “trompoppies,” after receiving a scholarship to an exclusive private school. However, a misguided hazing ritual takes a dark turn, leading to the mysterious deaths of cheerleaders and the unraveling of the seemingly flawless community façade.

Trompoppie marks the debut of Showmax Original from acclaimed SAFTA and Silwerskerm-winning writer/director Etienne Fourie (known for Stiekyt, Die Windpomp, Tydelik Terminaal). The production is in the capable hands of multi-award-winning Homebrew Films, with Magda Louw, a 2023 Silwerskerm winner, at the helm.

Melissa Myburgh, nominated for Best Actress: Drama at the 2023 Silwerskerm Awards for her role in Dinge van ’n Kind, takes center stage as Luna, alongside Stian Bam, a Silwerskerm winner for The Story of Racheltjie de Beer and Donkerbos, portraying her widowed father.

Collaborating with Fourie was a compelling draw for Myburgh, who expressed her admiration for him, citing Die Windpomp as a significant influence on her decision to delve into Afrikaans films and TV.

Marion Holm, a SAFTA nominee from Suidooster, assumes the role of Jill Peterson, an indomitable soap star who mentors Luna, while Albert Maritz (Alles Malan) portrays Jill’s husband, Fred. The cast also features emerging talents like Celeste Loots, Luca Human, Frank Opperman, Braeden Buys, Daneel van der Walt, and Armand Aucamp.

Trompoppie promises not only gripping drama but also showcases the pressure, training, school life, popularity contests, and inter-girl rivalry inherent in the competitive world of drum majorettes. The series is poised to deliver captivating dance routines and unforeseen twists.

The production team, curated by Homebrew, boasts an ensemble of accomplished professionals, including SAFTA nominees Sunel Haasbroek, Marné van der Burgh, Johan Prinsloo, Eva Du Preez, and Loki Rothman, contributing their expertise as director of photography, costume designer, editors, and music composer, respectively.

In contrast to Fourie’s previous project, Stiekyt, which earned critical acclaim for its arthouse appeal, Trompoppie aims for a broader audience. Described by Fourie as a “love letter to audiences,” the series is crafted as a thrilling whodunnit, designed to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, appealing to a diverse audience seeking surprise and entertainment.
