Andre Braugher, renowned for his roles as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, has passed away at the age of 61. The actor, remembered by his distinctive deep voice, succumbed to a brief illness as confirmed by his publicist.
Braugher gained fame for his role in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street, spanning from 1992 to 1998. His portrayal of the tenacious and arrogant Detective Frank Pembleton earned him an Emmy in 1998.
It was his deadpan performance as Captain Raymond Holt in the popular comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, alongside Andy Samberg for eight seasons, that propelled him to widespread recognition. Braugher secured two Critics Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and received four Emmy nominations for his role as Holt, the no-nonsense, Black, and gay precinct boss.
Born in Chicago in 1962, Braugher studied theatre on a Stanford scholarship and later attended the Juilliard School for drama. His cinematic breakthrough came in the 1989 film Glory, where he portrayed a Union soldier in one of the earliest African American regiments of the American Civil War. The film, earning three Oscars, included a Best Supporting Actor award for Braugher’s co-star Denzel Washington.
Throughout his career, Braugher played diverse roles in television films, including revivals of the classic crime series Kojak, before achieving critical acclaim in Homicide: Life on the Street.
