Jub Jub’s case postponed to February next year

The legal proceedings involving musician and TV presenter Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye have been pushed to 5 February 2024. Appearing briefly at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, Jub Jub, accompanied by his father and a security team, seemed calm.

Jub Jub’s defence, Advocate Terrence Baloyi, questioned the timing of the complainants, suggesting that if the charges were genuinely serious, they should have been brought forward much earlier. Baloyi expressed skepticism about the strength of the state’s case, especially considering the considerable time lapse.

“We are talking about something that happened 20 years ago. I still maintain that if the plea was that serious, it should have been brought earlier. I’m wondering if the state has a strong case against us because in an issue where they say ‘a life being in danger,’ why wait so long?” asked Baloyi. He emphasized that while there are no current concerns, proper legal procedures must be followed.

Magistrate Betty Khumalo mentioned the possibility of relocating the matter to a different court due to her schedule. She stated that the decision rests with court management. “It’s the management that said the matter should be reallocated to a different court because I will be busy with other matters in January. Hence, I’m suggesting that you take the 5th February or a much earlier date,” Khumalo explained.

The magistrate further clarified that the postponement was to allow for additional consultation and potential re-allocation. Jub Jub faces 13 charges, including multiple counts of rape, indecent assault, assault causing grievous bodily harm, and several counts of kidnapping.
