It’s the day of truth for fiery author, Jackie Phamotse.
The celebrated writer and motivational powerhouse, facing the heat with two counts of crimen injuria, one count of criminal defamation, and one count of contempt of court, will have her fate sealed today in the Randburg Magistrates Court.
The Johannesburg-based 34-year-old appeared in court on Thursday, November 17, for what turned out to be a suspense-filled postponement. The reason for the delay? The court was eagerly awaiting the social worker’s report. The initial sentencing date of Tuesday, November 14, was already looming.
The state prosecutor made it clear during her October 24 appearance that she was not to meet or contact the complainants. A stern warning echoed – no intimidation, or else she’d have a not-so-pleasant encounter with law enforcement.
The legal journey escalated when, on Wednesday, September 19, the Phamotse was found guilty of defamation of character against TV personality Basetsana and her husband, Romeo Kumalo. State prosecutor Yusuf Baba emphasized the infringement on Basetsana’s constitutional right to dignity and privacy, citing Jackie’s alleged 2018 tweet about a sex video involving the TV power couple and a celebrity boy.
The court ordered the removal of all such statements from her social media, threatening her with breach of bail conditions if she failed to comply. The stakes are high, and the courtroom awaits – will Jackie emerge unscathed or face the consequences? The verdict will tell.
