“Please issue the family an apology”: Somizi under fire for faking Mbongeni Ngema WhatsApp message

South African social media users are criticizing media personality Somizi Mhlongo after allegations surfaced that he fabricated a WhatsApp message exchange with the late playwright and actor Mbongeni Ngema.

The Idols SA judge went online to offer condolences to Ngema, who tragically lost his life in a car accident this week. Somizi shared a screenshot of a message that he claimed Ngema had sent to him.

However, the deception was exposed when an observant user pointed out that the message had only one tick, indicating that Somizi had sent the message rather than receiving it.

Mbongeni Ngema, known for the acclaimed musical “Sarafina,” passed away in a car crash at the age of 68, leading to an outpouring of tributes from the nation.

Somizi, who is also associated with “Sarafina,” took to Instagram to share what he presented as a heartfelt message from Ngema before his passing. The discrepancy in the ticks quickly led users to realize that the message was sent by Somizi, prompting him to delete the post from his Instagram account.

As expected, social media users are not holding back in trolling Somizi over the incident. Some are calling for him to issue an apology to the Ngema family, expressing disappointment and frustration with the perceived attempt to make the situation about himself.

“Why did you delete the post? Always making it about yourself @somizi. This is really sad. Please issue an apology to the family,” wrote one Instagram user.
