Spar Proteas lose to England at coach Norma Plummer’s last game as head coach

In a tightly contested battle, South Africa succumbed to a narrow 53-50 defeat against hosts England in the third match of the Vitality Netball Series in Nottingham on Sunday, resulting in England claiming the series 2-1.

In her final game as Head coach of the Spar Proteas, coach Norma Plummer made a strategic change with Phumza Maweni starting in place of the injured Nicola Smith.

The match commenced with the hosts effectively neutralizing the Proteas’ fast-paced game, forcing them into committing more errors. At the end of the first quarter, England led 16-11.

The pressure from England persisted in the second quarter, with the Proteas having to fight to secure a 14–13 win for the quarter.

In the third quarter, the Proteas introduced Bongiwe Msomi for Khanyisa Chawane and replaced Jeante Strydom with Boitumelo Mahloko.

Despite another tightly contested quarter, the score remained 42-38 in favor of England. In the last quarter, Ine Mari Venter entered the game for Rolene Streutker, and Owethu Ngubane replaced Kamogelo Maseko for South Africa.

Commenting on her last game, Plummer said she was privileged to have worked with the best players.

“I have had the privilege of working with the best bunch of players in this South African team,” she said.

“It is unfortunate we did not win the series, but I can assure you that we have built something here and I can only hope that the team grows from here.

“I’d like to wish the team well and thank them for a great second stint. The time is now for Netball South Africa and netball in South Africa to grow.
