The champions of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations are set to receive a historic seven million dollars (130 million rands), as disclosed in a statement by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Thursday.
This amount represents a 40 percent increase from the prize money awarded to Senegal, the winners of the previous edition held in Cameroon two years ago.
The runners-up in the Ivory Coast, the host country for the upcoming tournament scheduled from January 13 to February 11, will receive four million dollars. Teams eliminated in the semi-finals will each be awarded $2.5 million, and quarterfinalists will receive $1.3 million each, according to the statement.
Detailed information on other prize money categories was not provided.
The Ivory Coast, hosting the event along with 23 other nations, including the record seven-time champions Egypt, will compete for the championship. The tournament kicks off on January 13, with two-time champions Ivory Coast facing Guinea-Bissau in the opening match at the 60,000-seat Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
