Elton John reaches a great milestone as he joins the EGOT ‘club’ with Emmy Awards win

Renowned entertainer Elton John achieved an impressive milestone on Monday by joining the exclusive club of EGOT winners—individuals who have secured an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. The 76-year-old British singer-songwriter, recovering from a recent knee operation, earned his Emmy for “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium,” winning Outstanding Variety Special (Live) at the Emmys in Los Angeles.

Elton John becomes the 19th person ever to attain EGOT status, a recognition only bestowed upon those who have made significant contributions across various entertainment fields. Despite his absence at the ceremony, producer Ben Winston accepted the award on his behalf, emphasizing the historical significance of the win. The Dodger Stadium concert, marking Elton John’s farewell from the North American leg of his extensive tour, turned out to be an unexpected milestone in his illustrious career.

The farewell tour was a colossal success, with Billboard magazine estimating its gross revenue at nearly a billion dollars. Elton John’s EGOT status is a testament to his exceptional achievements, including two Oscars for best original song (“Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from “The Lion King” and “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from “Rocketman”). Additionally, he boasts a Tony Award for his original score for “Aida” and five Grammy wins, including the iconic “Candle in the Wind” in 1998.

Elton John now joins the ranks of EGOT winners, a prestigious group that includes luminaries like Rita Moreno, John Gielgud, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, Tim Rice, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Viola Davis. This accomplishment solidifies his legacy as a versatile and influential figure in the world of entertainment.
