The head of the Catholic Church and the bishop of Rome, Pope Francis has come out guns blazing against the widespread practice of surrogacy, labelling it as a “deplorable” method of parenting that compromises the dignity of women and children.
In his annual address to diplomats at the Holy Sea, the Pope categorized surrogacy alongside some serious global issues like conflict in Ukraine and Gaza, climate change, and migration challenges.
The Pope firmly said: “I find the practice of surrogacy deplorable, as it undermines the dignity of both women and children, exploiting vulnerable situations for financial gain. Children are blessings, not commodities to be traded.”
The 87-year old Pope Francis continues to emphasize the sanctity of life, asserting that unborn children should not be treated as commodities or subjected to trafficking. He called upon the international community to universally prohibit this practice. This stance is in alignment with the Catholic Church’s longstanding opposition to surrogacy, although it has allowed children born through surrogacy to be baptized under certain conditions.
To top it all off, Pope Francis also reiterated his reservations about “gender theory,” which challenges traditional male and female distinctions. He views this theory as a dangerous ideology that erases essential differences between genders.
Despite Pope Francis’s reputation for adopting progressive stances within the Catholic Church, such as supporting the LGBT community by allowing blessings for same-sex couples, he maintains conservative views on issues like abortion.
