Mbongeni Ngema, the renowned playwright and creator of Sarafina!, who tragically lost his life in a head-on collision while en route to Durban last week, will be honoured with a special provincial official funeral category 2. This designation, which includes elements of police ceremonial honours, is reserved for distinguished individuals specifically identified by the president at the request of a province’s premier.
Kwazulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube expressed that Ngema’s artistic contributions played a vital role in the struggle for freedom in South Africa. She emphasized that the request for a special provincial official funeral was made to acknowledge Ngema’s significant impact on the country’s journey toward freedom.
Dube-Ncube stated that this noble gesture would provide comfort to Ngema’s family and fellow South Africans, ensuring that he receives a send-off fit for his stature. Ngema passed away in a hospital last Wednesday following a car crash involving a truck in the Mbizana area in the Eastern Cape.
The premier remarked, “This is indeed a befitting honour to Madlokovu, who worked tirelessly for many decades to put South Africa on the global pedestal through art.” Ngema, known as Madlokovu, creatively confronted the apartheid regime using art and theatre, raising global awareness about the oppressive nature of apartheid.
Dube-Ncube highlighted Ngema’s role as a passionate ambassador of theatre and music, emphasizing his efforts to discover, develop, and nurture talent from townships and rural areas. She noted that many practitioners owe their success to Ngema’s contributions.
The premier expressed gratitude for Ngema’s existence and, while mourning his passing, extended condolences to his family. Further details about the funeral venue will be provided by the province and the family soon.
