Christopher Nolan’s compelling portrayal of the father of the atomic bomb, “Oppenheimer,” dominated the Oscar nominations with an impressive 13 nods, including Best Picture.
Following closely were “Poor Things,” a female-focused reinterpretation of the Frankenstein myth, earning 11 nominations, and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10 nods.
On a somewhat disappointing note, “Barbie,” the year’s highest-grossing film and part of last summer’s “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, secured eight nominations. Despite the respectable tally for a satire based on a popular line of plastic dolls, it fell short of predictions and faced notable snubs for director Greta Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie.
Ryan Gosling, a supporting actor nominee for “Barbie,” expressed outrage at the oversights, emphasizing the integral roles of Gerwig and Robbie in the film. “Oppenheimer,” released on the same day as “Barbie,” emerged as the front-runner for Best Picture and earned nominations for Nolan as director, along with stars Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.
“Killers of the Flower Moon,” Martin Scorsese’s ambitious true crime saga, made history with Lily Gladstone becoming the Oscars’ first Native American nominee for Best Actress. The 96th Academy Awards ceremony on March 10 is anticipated to witness intense competition among these acclaimed films.
