Ukhozi FM’s Song of the Year has sparked controversy once again, eliciting reactions from listeners and music enthusiasts. Maskandi musician Khuzani featuring Luve claimed the top spot with the track “Umjolo Lowo,” securing nearly 1 million votes as Ukhozi FM welcomed 2024. Mthandeni featuring Lwah’s “Paris” followed with over 700,000 votes, while Dlala Thukzin featuring Zaba & Skye’s “iPlan” secured the third spot with a modest 90,422 votes.
While some view this as a straightforward voting outcome, others have criticized the station’s voting system and the Top 10 selection method. A social media user suggested that “people voted for Khuzani, not the song,” and there were expressions of disappointment that popular artist Mnike did not make it into the Top 10.
In 2021, Ukhozi FM faced backlash when newcomer DJ Hlo’s “Isibani” won Song of The Year. Responding to allegations against Ukhozi FM’s business manager, the station emphasized that “song of the year campaigns are subject to stringent criteria setting processes, and Ukhozi FM is no exception.”
Despite the station’s assurance, social media users remain skeptical, suggesting that the station might need to reconsider its approach to this iconic segment to maintain its perceived integrity.
