Joe Budden has opened up and has admitted that as much as he doesn’t dwell in regret, he recognizes that there are moments in his past he could’ve approached differently.
On The Pivot Podcast with former NFL players Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder, Budden reflected on his public reservations about Jay-Z becoming the president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings in 2004. He admitted to being among several artists on the label who weren’t initially comfortable with Jay-Z’s elevated position. “It was unprecedented to see a fellow rapper making decisions about releases for artists like DMX and LL Cool J. I didn’t handle that well,” Budden admitted.
He recalled his frequent critical comments in interviews, even though they might have been counterproductive. “Every time I had a platform, I was outspoken against those individuals, who perhaps were trying to guide me. Even if their intentions weren’t to support me, my reactions didn’t help my situation,” Budden remarked.
In his earlier works like “Mood Muzik 2” and “Mood Muzik 3,” Budden didn’t shy away from addressing Jay-Z directly. Lyrics like “Can’t listen to Blueprint the same way” and “I have reservations about Hov” from his songs showcased his discontent during that period.
However, Budden clarified during the podcast that while he might have misstepped in his approach, he draws invaluable lessons from these experiences. Responding to Crowder’s query about any regrets, Budden affirmed, “Absolutely, there are moments I reflect upon and wish I’d handled differently.”
While discussing past disputes, including his rift with Eminem and Shady Records, Budden emphasized that his primary motive was advocating for himself and fellow Slaughterhouse members. He maintained that even if his methods were flawed, his intentions were always rooted in seeking the best outcomes for everyone involved.
