“We did it Baby!”: Trevor Noah makes history as he wins Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series as the first black person

Our one and only international comedian, Trevor Noah achieved a significant milestone at the 75th Annual Emmy Awards, finally securing his first Emmy win for Outstanding Talk Series with “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” After receiving 17 nominations over the past five years, Noah emerged victorious in a category that included formidable competitors such as Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart.

Nominees were considered based on their show’s release date between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023. Despite leaving Comedy Central and “The Daily Show” in September 2022, Noah’s show still qualified him for the nomination.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, the Johannesburg-born host humorously said: “I told you we would beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category.” Noah expressed gratitude to his team, acknowledging key figures like David Kibuuka, Joseph Opio, David Paul Meyer, Roy Wood Jr, Jordan Klepper, and showrunner Jen Flanz. He gave a special thanks to Jon Stewart, who invited him to take over “The Daily Show” in 2015.

Reflecting on his favourite episode in the press room, Noah mentioned “Trump and the African Dictator,” citing the challenges faced in creating the episode and the team’s dedication to bringing the vision to life. He also highlighted the joy of traveling with “The Daily Show” team to various cities across America, creating memorable experiences and connections with the people they were making the show for.
