Over 1 million people registered over the voter registration weekend

Over one million voters registered during the second voter registration weekend, according to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

Across the two days, more than half a million registrations were recorded at 23,303 voting stations, with an additional 564 new voters registering on the second day. Of the one million registered during the weekend, over 700,000 were new voters, and more than 81% of them were youths under 30.

The new registrations include 1,194,314 new voters added to the voters’ roll ahead of the upcoming elections. Of these, 52% are women, 48% are men, and nearly half are aged between 20 and 29. The total number of registered voters on the voters’ roll now stands at 26 million.

KwaZulu-Natal registered the highest number of new registrations, followed by Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. Gauteng has the most registered voters, with 6.3 million, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 5.5 million. The Electoral Commission expressed appreciation for the citizens’ enthusiastic participation and encouraged all South Africans to register and cast their votes in the forthcoming elections.

During the voter registration, Home Affairs extended working hours and opened offices around the country to assist those needing IDs.

Over 23,400 people collected their IDs, and 9,100, mostly first-time applicants, applied for IDs, with more than 920 people applying for and receiving temporary identification.
