Thandiswa Mazwai shuts down Tiny Desk

Parents usually don’t make the “cool” list in their kids’ books, but when they hit the stage on one of the hottest live music platforms worldwide, that’s something new.

Just ask seasoned musician Thandiswa Mazwai, whose highly awaited performance on the Tiny Desk Concert dropped on April Fool’s Day, leaving her daughter Malaika and the whole country beaming with pride.

Thandiswa had announced earlier this year that she’d be gracing the Tiny Desk stage after her stellar show in New York at globaFEST back in January.

Now, for those not in the know, NPR Music, the brains behind Tiny Desk Concerts, teamed up with GlobalFEST for an online music extravaganza called Tiny Desk Meets globalFEST. Last year, African superstar Angélique Kidjo hosted the show.

Tiny Desk Concerts, a series of live concerts hosted by NPR Music since 2008, is a big deal. And when Thandiswa rocked the stage, South Africans couldn’t contain their excitement, flooding the YouTube comments with messages of pride.

Leading the pack was none other than Thandiswa’s daughter, Malaika, who gushed, “Oh my mommy. I’m immensely proud of you.”

As fans shared photos of themselves tuning in, Malaika couldn’t help but express her joy, saying, “Trolling aside, I’m so proud of my mom. The album sounds soooo beautiful and so personal. I’ve been listening to it slowly so I can take it in and wow. Tiny Desk and GlobalFEST were the beginning of new heights.”

And with Thandiswa’s fourth album, Sankofa, set to drop on April 12, produced in part by US artist Meshell Ndegeocello, fans can expect even more greatness. Thandiswa treated viewers to classics like “Abenguni” and “Ingoma” during her Tiny Desk Concert, along with a sneak peek of an unreleased song, “Children of the Soil.”

The title of her album, Sankofa, inspired by the Akan Tribe of Ghana, signifies “go back and get it,” symbolizing the journey of looking back to move forward.

So, as Thandiswa continues to blaze her trail in the music scene, backed by her incredible band and fuelled by her daughter’s unwavering support, there’s no telling what heights she’ll reach next.
