Actor Mpho Sebeng passes away in an accident, tributes pour in

South African actor Mpho Sebeng has passed away at the tender age of 31. The Sebeng family confirmed the news in a statement released last evening.

“The family of South African entertainer, Mpho Sebeng, is deeply saddened to confirm his passing to the public and media,” the statement reads.

“Mpho tragically lost his life in the early hours of Sunday, 5 May 2024, in a car accident in Potchefstroom. While the family appreciates the outpouring of love and condolences, they kindly request some space to process this devastating news.”

Sebeng, born in Soweto on 1 December 1992, graduated from West Ridge High School in 2011, where he excelled in drama, earning full colors.

He made his television debut in the SABC drama series, “Justice for All,” and “Zero Tolerance.” His breakthrough TV role came in the Mzansi Magic drama, “Ring of Lies,” which earned him a Best Actor Safta nomination in 2018.

Since then, Sebeng showcased his talent in various shows, including “Savage Beauty,” “The Brave Ones,” and “Miseducation” on Netflix, as well as “The Queen,” “The Throne,” “Zbondiwe,” “Scandal,” and “Hush Money.”

On the big screen, he appeared in films like “Winnie” alongside Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard, “Ngoma Film,” “Collision,” and “The Jakes are Missing,” which earned him an AMVCA Best Supporting Actor nomination in 2017.

Tributes from industry colleagues and fans flooded social media on Sunday.

Actor, producer, and friend Zola Hashatsi wrote on Instagram: “It is with a heavy heart to announce the passing of a young brother, friend I took in to replace us when we exited @craze_tv, a thespian that was @mpho_sebeng. This one hurts deeply.

“His star was only beginning to shine. What a loss, he was only 30 years young. I’ll provide more information as time goes on, and will be with the family this week.”
