Thebe Magugu graces The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute reveals its Spring 2024 exhibition titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”, which features a look from our  AW23 Folklorics collection. The print depicts a shipwreck in progress, which is mimicked in the exhibition space through a video by SHOWstudio depicting a raging sea.

When asked about the ensemble, Thebe Magugu says, “The shipwreck print allegorically speaks of sirens believed to have crashed ships just off the Cape coast and, as a child, we were warned  about going too deep into the local river, fearing ‘Mongwa Wa Letsa’ (Someone of the Lake). In hindsight, one learns to truly be respectful of water; the serenity it can bring, the power it can amass, and all the natural and supernatural things that exist in it. It can kill and heal”.
