Lamine Yamal: The teenage talent that anchored Spain over the French Alps

Red and blue flares set off at opposite ends of the stadium on Tuesday night, as France and Spain fans gathered in support of their respective nations. The UEFA EUROS 2024 semi-final blockbuster matchup between two juggernauts was highly anticipated and fell nothing short of expectation. A game filled with fireworks, drama and the utmost entertainment.

France entered the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, in high hopes backed by their superstar and captain, Kylian Mbappe. The 2018 FIFA World Cup champions had arguably the better team on paper, boasting a team with immense quality and the player profiles that strike fear in their opposition.

However, Spain have far exceeded expectations throughout this tournament. Their young talent’s refusal to back down, coupled with the tactical genius that is their head coach, Luis De La Fuente, allows the team to flourish with his style of play. Their ability to create opportunities through the fluent passing game has enabled La Roja (The Red One) to go unbeaten at this tournament.

The opening minutes of the game set the tone for the match, as 10 minutes had not passed before the flood gates opened. A swift cross from Kylian Mbappe found itself on the receiving end of French striker Randal Kolo Muani’s head, shocking the ball-watching Spanish defense. Les Bleus (The Blues) fans erupted as their nation put a grapple hold on the game with a slim but comforting 1-0 lead. The Spanish took some time to adjust to the game, leaving themselves susceptible to consecutive French counter attacks.

But the young diamond in the rough that is Yamine Lamal could not accept what seemed early on to be his team’s fate. He took matters into his own hands only 12 minutes after the France goal, in a moment of pure individual brilliance. The teenage phenomenon became a reincarnation of his idol Lionel Messi, as he weaved past two defenders and beautifully curled the ball into the top corner from range. It was a typical Messi-esque goal, which left not only Spanish fans speechless, but the rest of the stadium at a loss for words.

If there was ever a moment that stamped the passing of the baton to the new generation, this was it. The red flares covered the stadium, as Spanish fans, players and coaches loudly embraced their prodigy.

Here’s what fans on X had to say about Lamine Yamal’s goal…

@FabrizioRomano posted, “Lamine Yamal, ladies and gentlemen. The youngest goalscorer in the history of the Euros, 16 years old… …INSANE.”

@NANAKWAKUAGYEI4 posted, “Lamine Yamal saw Rabiot and was like yeah, it’s about time I score a banger”

This magic moment seemed to be the impulse of force La Furia Española (The Spanish Fury) needed, as they could not be subdued after. Only four minutes later, they hit back again, with an amazing goal from RB Leibzig attacking midfielder, Dani Olmo.

A ricochet following a cross saw the ball weaving in the air, and with a first touch crafted with the highest level of composure, Olmo brought the ball down into his control. This touch left the French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni in the dust- leaving Olmo with only the keeper to beat. He tucked it away in cool fashion, maintaining his high level of composure. The French were stunned! As they conceded two amazing goals in a matter of mere minutes.

France’s highly respected head coach, Didier Deschamps, tried his best to rally his troops together at the halfway mark. He opened the second half making three attacking substitutions to salvage his side back into the game. But the resilience of Spain, led by the best defensive midfielder in the world, Rodri, was simply too solid for France to break through.

As the final whistle blew, the Spanish players congregated the field in celebration, as they achieved what many thought they wouldn’t. They climbed the French Alp and are now marching onto the final of UEFA Euro 2024! The brilliance of Yamine Lamal cannot be understated, as the team gains new life with every touch he takes on the ball.

The young Spaniard team continues to silence doubters and awaits the winner in today’s game that sees England take on Netherlands for the last spot in the final. If Spain can keep up their beautiful display of football, very little stands in the way of them winning it all.

The tournament is coming down to the wire, begging the question- who will claim the throne as the “Kings of Europe?”
