Muvhango’s Grand Finale: A Bittersweet Farewell After 27 Glorious Years

In a surprising turn of events, SABC 2’s beloved soapie “Muvhango” has taken its final bow. The long-running drama, which first graced our screens in April 1997, closed its 27-year run on the 2nd of July 2024. Episode 130 of season 25 marked the end of an era, leaving fans both nostalgic and stunned.

Viewers were caught off guard as the network offered no prior updates about the show’s impending conclusion. The finale wrapped up with a heart-warming wedding scene between Reneilwe and Kgosi, a fitting yet emotional send-off for the series.

Created by the talented Duma Ndlovu and brought to life by Word of Mouth Productions, “Muvhango” started as a weekly treat before its soaring popularity turned it into a daily fixture. The Tshivenda-language drama not only entertained but also played a crucial role in preserving and celebrating Venda culture.

As the final episode aired, “Muvhango” took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to officially confirm the end. The heartfelt post read, “End of the Road for Muvhango, Thank you for watching all these years.” The announcement sparked a flurry of reactions, with fans flocking to social media to express their shock and share their favorite memories.

Despite being SABC 2’s top-rated program with an impressive 1,292,635 viewers in May 2024, the series’ abrupt end has left many questions unanswered. Neither SABC nor the show’s creators have provided further details about the sudden conclusion. Entertainment blogger Phil Mphela had hinted at the show’s uncertain future, reporting that the production company had ceased filming, and contract renewal discussions were stalled.

“Muvhango” now joins “7de Laan” as another cherished soapie that SABC 2 has recently axed, marking the end of an era for South African television. Over the years, “Muvhango” has launched numerous stars into the spotlight, creating a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry.
