We all know that Nicki Minaj isn’t one to bite her tongue, and when it comes to defending Lil Wayne, she’s louder than ever, especially if the perceived slight comes from none other than JAY-Z. In the wake of the recent announcement that Kendrick Lamar will headline the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in New Orleans, many fans of Weezy, a New Orleans native, felt it was a major snub. And in the age of social media, it didn’t take long for fingers to point towards JAY-Z, whose Roc Nation is the NFL’s official Live Music Entertainment Strategist.
Among the most vocal critics of the decision? Nicki Minaj. On Monday, September 9, the Queen of Rap took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and unleashed a series of heated posts, making it clear that she wasn’t having it.
“I love watching the whole industry play dumb time after time,” Nicki began, throwing some serious side-eye. But the heat didn’t stop there. She then seemingly addressed JAY-Z directly, writing, “Go & enjoy your fkng money b4 it’s too late.”
But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Nicki took a direct shot at JAY’s past controversies with the NFL, alluding to the backlash Roc Nation received when they entered a partnership with the league—especially in the wake of Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling protests. “One n-gga took a knee. The other n-gga took the bag. He gon get you ‘n-ggers’ in line every fkng time,” she blasted, accusing JAY-Z of prioritizing profit over the cause.
The sharp critique continued with Nicki calling out JAY for what she viewed as personal beef affecting professional decisions. “Got everything in the world. Still spiteful & evil. Disgusting,” she wrote, accusing him of using his influence to block Lil Wayne’s shot at the Super Bowl spotlight.
According to Nicki, it’s all about ego. She suggested that JAY’s issues with Birdman, Drake, and herself were at the root of what she believed to be a deliberate snub. “Denying a young black man what he rightfully put into this game for no other reason but your ego,” she wrote, laying it all out. “Your hatred for BIRDMAN, Drake & Nicki got you punishing Lil Wayne?!?!!!”
Nicki wasn’t the only one upset by the decision. Dipset’s own Cam’ron shared similar sentiments during his sports talk show It Is What It Is. While Cam gave Kendrick his flowers, calling him “one of the top artists of this generation,” he didn’t hold back when it came to the NFL’s decision. “It’s in New Orleans and you don’t get Lil Wayne? That’s what we doing?” Cam questioned. “There’s no reason why Lil Wayne should not be performing at the Super Bowl.”
Without directly naming names, Cam’ron hinted that past tensions were to blame for Wayne’s absence from the biggest stage in sports, adding fuel to the growing sentiment that this was more than just an artistic decision. “It’s one person who’s stopping this… Lil Wayne had a problem with somebody before who’s kinda part of the organization running it. This is payback.”
As the Super Bowl LIX halftime show inches closer, the drama surrounding Wayne’s exclusion only intensifies. With Minaj and other hip-hop heavyweights voicing their frustration, it’s clear this story is far from over. For now, though, all eyes are on JAY-Z, Roc Nation, and Kendrick Lamar, as fans continue to debate whether the show missed a golden opportunity to celebrate a hometown legend.
