Rugby Wrap – What happened on the field this past weekend

WXV Round-2

In a closely fought WXV 2 round, played in Cape Town, the South Africa (SA)women’s XV rugby team, fought hard in their match against log leaders Australia, including a last minute try by Mickie Gunther but it was too little too late as the Australian team won the match by 7-points but was enough to at least secure a well-deserved bonus point for the Women’s Springbok Squad.

This leaves SA lying third on the WXV Group 2 log with seven points, with Scotland in second spot with eight points after beating Japan 19-13, and Australia maintaining their log leader position with 10-points in the bag.

SA WXV will face the Italian squad, that beat Wales 8-5 last Friday, this coming weekend when they will face-off at the Athlone Sports Stadium, Cape Town at 14H00 on Saturday.

URC Championship Round 3

It was a fantastic four-for-four weekend fixture for the SA men’s squads in the United Rugby Championship with all four SA teams running in wins.

The Lions played exceptional rugby to thrash Edinburgh 55-21 with six tries scored in the first half of the game. The win sees the Lions move up into sixth position on the table with only two games played and a game in hand due to the first round postponed match with the Sharks still to be rescheduled.

The Bulls also finished in style with a 47-21 win over Ulsters and the Stormers beating Zebre 5-36 in an away clash.

The Sharks made heavy work of their match against a committed Dragons team who made the Durban based team sweat a close finish and final score of 33-30. While its fair to acknowledge that the Sharks were without some of their top players, it was still a match with far too many errors that almost saw the Sharks lose what should have been an expected win.

This coming weekend sees all the SA teams playing away games, with the Lions facing the Dragons, the Bulls will face the Ospreys, Stormers will be up against Edinburgh with the Sharks playing Benetton.
