Women’s International Rugby Live in South Africa This Weekend

Following its impactful launch in October 2023, Women’s Fifteen Rugby (WXV rugby) is a new development introduced by World Rugby, that is aimed at accelerating growth of the women’s game, while providing more competitive matches for unions to develop further. This will lead to an expanded 16-team Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2025.

All eyes on WXV 2024

WXV consists of a three-layer tournament system with six teams in each based on their world rankings at the beginning of the season. South Africa, currently ranked twelfth, is hosting the WXV2 tournament in Cape Town with Dubai hosting the WXV3 tournament and the USA hosting the WXV1 Tournament.

With the added excitement of six additional Women’s Rugby World Cup England 2025 teams up for grabs, the teams have it all to play for. 2024 saw an early start to the tournament in order to facilitate team planning and performance preparations for qualifying unions for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.

All three WXV tournament levels will play across the same three weekends to enable the six qualification spots to be confirmed immediately after the conclusion of the tournament.

Round-1 has already been concluded and saw an historic win for the South African squad over Japan.

Round 2 –  Is set to be played this weekend from Friday, 4 October – Sunday, 6 October and Round 3 will be played on Friday, 11 – Sunday, 13 October.

Key Matches This Weekend

With the SA women’s team facing the current WXV2 top ranking team Australia, they will have their work cut out for them this Saturday. The Australian squad had an excellent start last weekend with a 37-5 drubbing of Wales in their opening match and are clear favourites for the clash. However, assistant coach, Laurian Johannes-Haupt, says that the opportunity for the team is massive and they are aiming at securing the best possible draw for the 2025 World cup and will be fighting for this.

-The match kicks off at 17H00 local time and will be played at the Athlone Sports Stadium

An earlier match on Saturday will see Japan clash with Scotland in what promises to be another exciting contest, with both teams likely to be running the ball and creating spaces out wide.

-The match kicks off at 14H00 and will be played at the Athlone Sports Stadium in Cape Town.

Ticket prices are only R25 for both Saturday matches and promises to be a most entertaining day out for those in Cape Town this weekend.
