The renowned business mogul and Royal AM owner, Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize, is back in the spotlight, but not for her usual fancy displays or high-profile soccer exploits. Instead, MaMkhize found herself at the centre of a dramatic South African Revenue Service (SARS) raid on her rumoured R20 million La Lucia mansion on Tuesday afternoon, leaving South Africans buzzing with speculation.
Reports suggest that SARS, supported by law enforcement, swooped in to secure and preserve her assets as part of an ongoing investigation into her alleged R37 million tax debt. While SARS confirmed the La Lucia raid, rumours swirled that her other high-end properties scattered across Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Sandton were also targeted. However, SARS has remained tight-lipped on these allegations, keeping the public guessing.
The story took a financial twist when MaMkhize’s tax troubles reportedly escalated from R12.7 million to an eye-watering R37 million in just 24 hours. The sharp increase stems from a court judgment ordering Royal AM to pay Serbian footballer Samir Nurkovic the full value of his two-year contract. Coupled with her existing tax liabilities, this judgment seemed to tip the scales against her.
This isn’t the first time SARS has tried to reel in the flamboyant entrepreneur. Earlier this year, an attempt to seize her assets resulted in a standoff between security firms, leaving SARS empty-handed. Reports also claim that curators previously attempted to access her properties in Sandton and Durban but were blocked from entering.
Determined to settle the score, SARS recently obtained an execution order from the Pietermaritzburg High Court, allowing them to escalate their efforts. Describing their mission as part of an initiative to “combat tax evasion and criminal activity that undermines the country’s economy,” SARS made their intentions clear: this is not about one person, it’s about sending a message.
