After 8 Years of Legal Wrangling, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Finally Settle Divorce

The saga that kept Hollywood and its fans on the edge of their seats for nearly a decade has reached its final chapter. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, once the epitome of Hollywood glamour, have officially settled their divorce. It’s been over eight years since Jolie, now 49, filed to end their two-year marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.

On December 30, Jolie’s legal team confirmed that the pair signed off on their divorce. James Simon, Jolie’s lawyer, shared with PEOPLE, “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”

A source close to the actress added, “She doesn’t speak ill of [Pitt] publicly or privately. She’s been trying hard to be light after a dark time.” Meanwhile, Pitt’s representative declined to comment.

Jolie’s initial filing on September 19, 2016, came shortly after an alleged incident aboard a private plane. Jolie claimed that Pitt was abusive toward her and their six children during the flight. Although authorities investigated, no charges were filed, and Jolie chose not to press charges. This event became a pivotal moment in their contentious separation.

By January 2017, the couple had agreed to seal sensitive records concerning their children. At the time, the family included Maddox, now 23; Pax, 21; Zahara, 19; Shiloh, 18; and 16-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. The majority of the children are now adults, marking a significant shift in the dynamics of their custody disputes.

The divorce proceedings were bifurcated in 2019, declaring Pitt and Jolie legally single while their legal battles over finances and assets continued.

One of the most contentious points in the years following their separation has been the ownership and management of Château Miraval, their $164 million French estate and winery. Pitt sued Jolie in February 2022 over her decision to sell her stake in the winery, a move he claims violated an unspoken agreement. Jolie countered, accusing Pitt of waging a “vindictive war” against her.

This year, the feud took several dramatic turns. In November, Jolie achieved a legal victory when a judge ordered Pitt to disclose documents—emails and texts—that her legal team claims will support her allegations of abuse and cover-ups. However, Pitt’s camp scored its own win when Jolie’s motions to dismiss his lawsuit were rejected, setting the stage for a potential trial over their financial agreements.

While the settlement marks a significant step toward closure, the shadow of their public and private conflicts looms large. Both stars have moved on in their own ways. Pitt, now 61, has been linked to jewellery executive Ines de Ramon since 2022, while Jolie continues to focus on her children and philanthropic endeavours.
