South African media personality and YouTube sensation Lasizwe Dambuza has made a bold and inspiring move by checking himself into a mental health wellness centre to “recharge” after what he described as a whirlwind year. Sharing his journey on Instagram, Lasizwe opened up about the importance of prioritizing mental health, drawing widespread support from fans and followers.
On Monday, the Awkward Dates creator posted a heartfelt message written on his phone, accompanied by a screenshot that read: “It’s that time of the year when my phone battery is extremely low except this time, IT’S ME.” He added, “My mental health is my battery, and I’ve checked myself into a mental wellness facility to recharge so I can show up and perform at my best.”
Lasizwe reflected on the emotional toll of the past year, admitting that while it was filled with incredible achievements, it also came with its fair share of challenges. “Awkward Dates blew up in ways I never imagined, but with all those highs, there’s been some heavy stuff too. I struggle with impostor syndrome, and my personal life took some knocks—good and bad. It’s been a lot to carry, and I realized I need help processing everything,” he revealed.
He shared the deeply personal reality of not having parents to lean on during tough times, describing the wellness centre as a safe space for him to work through his emotions. “I don’t have parents to turn to… no mom, no dad to call up when life hits, so this is my outlet. I’m here with psychologists, therapists, and psychiatrists to work through it all. And let me just say this: asking for help doesn’t mean you’re weak or broken. It’s actually the strongest thing you can do.”
Encouraging his fans to listen to their own mental health needs, Lasizwe urged, “When your body or your mind tells you it needs you, listen. Don’t push that stuff aside. Talk to someone—a friend, family member, or a professional. Recharge yourself because, at the end of the day, nobody’s gonna take care of you the way you can.”
In his Instagram post, Lasizwe confirmed that his team would manage his social media accounts during his absence. “I’ve successfully checked myself into a mental health wellness center. It’s been a beautiful LONG year. TIME TO REST, RECHARGE, and REFLECT. My team will be taking over my social media accounts after this post as the show has to go on (Awkward Dates and social media campaigns).”
He also took a moment to express gratitude to his siblings for their unwavering support. “Thank you to my siblings! Thank you for dropping me off here and holding my hand during the check-in process! The Sweerie, Bo Makothi, I’ll see you guys when I am out and REFRESHED! I love you!”
This isn’t the first time Lasizwe has prioritized his mental health. In 2021, he checked himself into a similar facility after struggling with depression, courageously sharing his journey with his fans. At the time, he admitted, “I haven’t been okay for the past months. I have been so depressed. I have decided to fight this by taking a break and dealing with this 1-on-1.”
