Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion is back in the headlines, but this time, it’s for taking another stand to protect herself. On December 17, Megan filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking a restraining order against fellow rapper Tory Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting her multiple times in 2020.
This shocking incident, which sent ripples across the music industry and beyond, seems far from over. Megan alleges that Lanez, despite being behind bars, continues to target her through third-party surrogates. According to the petition, he’s using these intermediaries to tarnish her reputation, a claim supported by prison call logs from the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. These logs allegedly show Lanez instructing bloggers to spread misinformation, including baseless claims about missing evidence in the case.
“Even now, while behind bars, Mr. Peterson shows no signs of stopping,” Megan wrote in her petition, referring to Lanez by his real name, Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson. She also pointed out that the protective order previously granted to shield her has expired, leaving her exposed to what she describes as ongoing harassment and revictimization.
A court hearing on the matter is set for January 9, 2025. If granted, the restraining order would impose stricter conditions on Lanez to prevent further contact or harassment. For Megan, this step represents a continuation of her fight for justice and safety—a battle that began with the traumatic events of 2020 and the subsequent three-year legal ordeal that culminated in Lanez’s 2023 conviction.
Lanez was found guilty of assault with a semiautomatic handgun, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, and negligently discharging a firearm. His decade-long prison sentence reportedly costs taxpayers an estimated R1.8 million annually, according to the BBC.
Reflecting on her harrowing experience and the gruelling trial, Megan penned a powerful op-ed for Elle magazine, calling the verdict “a victory for every woman who has been shamed, dismissed, and blamed for a violent crime committed against her.” She added, “I survived being shot by someone I trusted and overcame the public humiliation of having my name dragged through the mud for the world to see.”
Social media has rallied behind Megan, celebrating her courage and resilience. One fan tweeted, “Megan is the definition of strength. No one should endure what she’s been through.”
While Lanez’s actions continue to draw widespread criticism, Megan has emerged as a beacon of hope for many survivors worldwide. Her unyielding determination to protect herself and her healing journey resonate deeply, highlighting the importance of safeguarding victims even after their abusers are convicted.
