With the summer holidays around the corner, it’s time to slow down, unwind and recharge. But for many South Africans, the festive season is anything but relaxing. According to a survey by Pharma Dynamics, eight out of ten South Africans admit to being ‘stressed out’ during the holidays.
The survey, which polled 500 South Africans from diverse age and gender groups, identified the leading sources of holiday stress. Financial pressure topped the list, with 92% of respondents citing seasonal expenses as their biggest worry. Women were found to be particularly affected by financial concerns. Securing the house before leaving for holiday was rated the second most stressful activity (85%), followed by the pressure of hosting and accommodating family (46%) and Christmas shopping (42%).
Moreover, the economic climate and rising costs are making it increasingly difficult for many to fully relax. This is where Rooibos, an affordable beverage and national favourite, can play a vital role in helping South Africans to find balance and calm during the holiday rush.
Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the Rooibos Council, explains why Rooibos is a good choice for stress relief.
“Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, rich in antioxidants and has a calming effect on the central nervous system. Its versatility allows you to incorporate it into various rituals, whether as a soothing beverage, part of a calming skincare routine or even a spa-inspired experience at home.”
According to du Toit, Rooibos contains aspalathin, a rare antioxidant that can help combat stress and promote better sleep. This makes it particularly suited to the summer holidays when the focus shifts to rejuvenation and recharging for the year ahead.
Here are some creative ways to make Rooibos a cornerstone of your summer holiday R&R routine:
- Morning refresh with Rooibos infusions: Start your day with a refreshing iced Rooibos infusion. Add slices of citrus fruits, sprigs of mint or a handful of berries to brewed and chilled Rooibos for a revitalising drink. This vitamin-packed beverage hydrates and energises while setting a tranquil tone for the day.
- Rooibos-infused bath soak: Transform your bathroom into a spa sanctuary with a Rooibos-infused bath soak. The tisane is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can soothe irritated skin and promote relaxation. Enhance the experience with essential oils like lavender or chamomile for a calming effect.
- DIY Rooibos face mask: Create a simple at-home spa treatment with a Rooibos face mask. Combine Rooibos with natural ingredients like honey, yoghurt or oatmeal to make a nourishing mask. This antioxidant-rich treatment can refresh tired skin after long days in the sun.
- Rooibos aromatherapy: Boil a pot of Rooibos and let the fragrant steam fill your space. The earthy, slightly sweet aroma of Rooibos can have a grounding and calming effect, ideal for unwinding after a busy day of holiday activities.
As the sun sets, use Rooibos to prepare for a restful night:
- Rooibos Latte: Treat yourself to a creamy Rooibos latte as a nightcap. Mix warm Rooibos with frothed milk and a drizzle of honey or vanilla. This soothing drink helps you relax without the risk of caffeine disrupting your sleep.
- Rooibos pillow mist: Use Rooibos-based essential oils or hydrosols as a pillow mist to enhance your bedtime routine. The calming scent can help you drift into a peaceful slumber.
- Mindful Rooibos ritual: Incorporate a mindfulness moment into your evening by sipping on Rooibos slowly while focusing on your breath. This practice encourages relaxation and mental clarity.
Research has highlighted the stress-reducing properties of Rooibos, showing its potential to lower cortisol levels and support heart health. For many, the act of brewing and sipping Rooibos itself becomes a meditative ritual, fostering a sense of calm.
“During the holiday season, we often forget to take time for ourselves amidst the rush of social gatherings and travel. Rooibos provides a natural way to slow down and nurture both body and mind,” adds du Toit.
Beyond its use as a beverage, Rooibos has found its way into a variety of wellness products, including oils and skincare. As you plan your summer holidays, remember to incorporate this versatile tisane into your daily rituals. Whether you sip it, soak in it or breathe in its soothing scent, Rooibos offers a natural pathway to R&R.
