South African Airways (SAA) passengers are in for a first-class culinary experience, thanks to none other than celebrity chef Lorna Maseko!
The award-winning chef, media personality, and all-round culinary queen has officially taken the reins as SAA’s executive chef for the 2025 fiscal year. And if you thought airline food was just about surviving the journey, think again, Maseko is here to turn it into a dining experience worth savouring.
Maseko announced the exciting partnership on her social media, brimming with enthusiasm: “I’m so proud and excited to announce that I’ve partnered with our national carrier, South African Airways, to create a menu for this fiscal year.”
Renowned for her innovative approach to food, Maseko has crafted a premium inflight menu infused with the rich flavours and heritage of South African cuisine. From Cape Malay spices to hearty traditional stews and vibrant African-inspired dishes, her menu celebrates the country’s culinary diversity while meeting the high standards of international airline dining.
In joining SAA’s culinary legacy, Maseko follows in the footsteps of esteemed chefs like Reuben Riffel and Benny Masekwameng, who have previously curated gourmet inflight offerings. But for Maseko, this venture is more than just about serving meals—it’s about storytelling through food.
Designing a menu for an airline isn’t as simple as plating up a beautiful dish in a restaurant kitchen. In a behind-the-scenes video shared on Instagram, Maseko revealed just how meticulous the process was: “There are so many intricate details that go into menus that are on a flight, and it’s quite an interesting process. I learned so much through all of this, I can’t wait for you guys to experience it.”
Her partnership with SAA’s catering division, Air Chefs, saw her team spending two full days curating over 30 different dishes. Each dish underwent rigorous tasting sessions to ensure every flavour, texture, and presentation met the demands of inflight dining—where altitude and air pressure subtly alter taste perception. It was a journey of culinary precision, and the result is a menu designed to bring warmth, comfort, and a touch of luxury to SAA’s business-class passengers.
The highly anticipated menu is available to business-class passengers on SAA’s long-haul and domestic flights, offering travellers a taste of home, whether they’re leaving or returning to South Africa.
