Gael Monfils, the 38-year-old Frenchman, played a top-drawer game to oust the 4th seeded American, Taylor Fritz in the third round of the Australian Open this morning.
Monfils lost the first set 3-6 and Fritz seemed set to dominate the game in what was expected to be a routine win for the American. The second set however, was a complete reverse with Monfils using his serve and overhead lob to great effect and winning the tie-break when Fritz hit the net after a clever lob by Monfils.
From that point on Monfils was in charge, hitting an impressive 82% wins on his first serve and even more impressive 74% wins on his second serve.
Gael Sebastian Monfils, recently became the oldest male to win an ATP title when he walked away with top honors at the ASB Classic in Auckland earlier in January, at the age of 38, beating Roger Federer’s record that had been set back in 2019. This was his 13th tour victory.
Monfils is married to top-30 WTA Tour player, Elina Svitolina, said after the win “Age is a number, but we keep working.”
His expression of joy after the win this morning says it all and the Frenchman may well be the one the bookies never saw coming in the tournament.
IN the women’s section, Ukrainian, Elina Svitolina, seeded 28th, beat Jasmine Paolinin of Italy, in another big upset in the tournament that saw the 4th seed exit unexpectedly. Svitolina won 2-6, 6-4,6-0 in convincing style.
