Traditional healer Makgotso “Gogo Maweni” Mofokeng appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto and was released on R5 000 bail.
She was arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with a December 2019 incident, where she allegedly struck the cousin of her third child’s father, former footballer Siyabonga Zulu, with a bottle.
Mofokeng claimed self-defence, stating she was attacked by a group during a public event in Soweto, and counter charges she filed were never pursued.
Police are also investigating her for four alleged murders in Eldorado Park, Mondeor, Orange Farm, and Bekkersdal between 2020 and 2024.
The investigations follow public accusations made by fellow sangoma Gogo Skhotheni, with whom Mofokeng had a public feud.
Skhotheni accused Mofokeng of unsolved murders and criticised her for performing rituals with a symbolic coffin representing Skhotheni’s late child.
Mofokeng, who is currently pregnant with twins, argued in court that the assault case was improperly revived years later, portraying herself as the victim.
Despite the pending investigations, she was granted bail, with the state not opposing her application.
While no danger to the public was found, the state has accused Maweni of giving false information during her bail application.
The case has been postponed to February 11.
