South African actress Thuso Mbedu is set to lead the highly anticipated film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel Children of Blood and Bone.
Taking to Instagram to share her excitement, Mbedu revealed her personal connection to the story:
“Children of Blood and Bone was gifted to me in 2019, and it’s one of the best gifts I’ve received. Upon reading it, I fell in love with it to the point that I made it a prayer point.”
“To sit here and draft this announcement is mind-boggling. To know that I have the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people as we tell this great story is truly humbling. I’m so excited. I’m so grateful.”
According to Variety, Mbedu will play Zelie, a courageous young woman in a West African-inspired kingdom who embarks on a journey to reclaim the magic stolen from her people by the oppressive King Saran.
Alongside, her older brother Tzain (Tosin Cole), Princess Amari (Amandla Stenberg), and Prince Inan (Damson Idris), Zelie leads a rebellion against the king’s brutal rule.
This marks another collaboration between Mbedu and Prince-Bythewood, following their work on The Woman King.
Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone, inspired by Yoruba culture, has been celebrated for its rich world-building and powerful themes of resistance, family, and heritage.
Fans of the novel can expect a visually stunning and emotionally charged adaptation that stays true to its roots.
As Mbedu thanked Adeyemi and her supporters, she promised, “We will make you proud.”
The action-fantasy epic directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), will hit IMAX screens on January 15, 2027, under Paramount Pictures.
