Werner Wessels Bids Farewell to Miss South Africa

Werner Wessels, the creative genius behind the Miss South Africa (Miss SA) organisation, has officially hung up his sash and stepped down from his role.

Known as the beauty guru with an unmatched flair for all things fabulous, Werner’s departure marks the end of a golden era for the South African pageantry world.

From the very first rhinestone to the final strut on the Miss Universe stage, Werner Wessels has been the mastermind behind some of South Africa’s most dazzling victories. His portfolio of pageant royalty reads like a who’s who of international beauty queens:

  • Rolene Strauss, crowned Miss World in 2014
  • Demi-Leigh Tebow (nee Nel-Peters), crowned Miss Universe in 2017
  • Tamaryn Green, first runner-up at Miss Universe in 2018
  • Zozibini Tunzi, crowned Miss Universe in 2019
  • Lalela Mswane, crowned Miss Supranational in 2022 and second runner-up at Miss Universe the same year

With a track record that would make even the most seasoned pageant coach blush, Werner’s influence has cemented South Africa as a powerhouse on the global stage. Two Miss Universe titles, one Miss World, and one Miss Supranational crown later, it’s clear his magic touch is no coincidence.

In a heartfelt announcement on Friday, 24 January, Werner Wessels bid farewell to the organisation he once called a dream come true. Reflecting on his journey, he shared: “This journey has been a dream come true, a journey filled with purpose, passion, and pride. I’m immensely proud of the work we have done and the impact I’ve made.”

But while Werner may be stepping away from the Miss SA spotlight, his mission to empower women remains unwavering. “I have always said I want my career to be a love letter to women, a celebration of their courage, brilliance, and limitless potential. While this marks the end of one chapter, it’s also the beginning of a new and exciting one. The best is yet to come, and I can’t wait to share what’s next.”

Werner’s ascent to pageant royalty began in 2011 when he joined the Miss SA family, bringing with him an innate understanding of what makes a queen shine. As he humbly put it in an interview with Radio 702: “The only thing that I actually do is make them realise their own power. I make them realise who they have already been their whole life and just give them the confidence to showcase that to the world.”

His talent for transforming contestants into global stars wasn’t just about teaching them how to walk or wear a crown. It was about showing them how to own their stories, amplify their voices, and exude a magnetic confidence that captured hearts worldwide.
