Renowned South African media personality Anele Mdoda recently took to social media to share a terrifying experience she had with an Uber driver in Cape Town.
The radio and TV host detailed the incident on her X account, highlighting the distressing behaviour of the driver and the steps she took to ensure her safety.
According to Mdoda, the encounter began when she selected the “don’t talk to me” option on the Uber app. This feature, designed to allow passengers to enjoy a quiet ride, reportedly angered the driver. She recounted that he responded aggressively, saying, “In my country, we would rape you to teach you a lesson.”
Fearing for her safety, Mdoda revealed that she had to pretend she was live-streaming on Instagram throughout the journey. “I faked being on Instagram Live to get home safe,” she explained in her post.
The situation escalated further when they arrived at her hotel. Mdoda stated that the driver began shouting at her, prompting her to start recording the confrontation.
“There was a couple that could see I was under duress,” she noted. She also apologized for her language in the video, emphasising that she was in danger at the time.
In a follow-up post, Mdoda made an even more alarming revelation: “So after he threatened me with rape to keep in line, I started recording so that if anything happens to me, it’s on record. I faked being on Instagram Live. This was in Cape Town.”
