From radio waves to the small screen, Nia Brown is proving that she’s a force to be reckoned with. The vibrant media personality, known for her work on radio, has landed her biggest acting role yet as Tshidi on etv’s Scandal!—and she couldn’t be more excited.
While this isn’t her first time on television, Nia admits that this is her most significant role to date. “I’ve done a few small productions here and there, but this is definitely the biggest role I’ve ever gotten,” she says.
Embracing the Role of Tshidi
Taking on the role of a wife for the first time, rather than the typical “girlfriend” character she’s often cast as, Nia is thrilled about the depth of her new role. “The dynamic between my character and Danny de Bruyne’s character is quite intriguing. They’re already stirring things up at Ethembeni, and I love that there’s always so much that can come from these kinds of storylines,” she shares.
Balancing Radio and TV
With a background in radio, stepping in front of the camera felt like a natural transition for Nia. “For me, radio and TV make sense together. I initially moved to Joburg to act—I studied Dramatic Arts at WITS—but radio found me along the way. It built up my confidence to the point where I feel comfortable in front of the camera,” she explains.
Though juggling both industries can be demanding, Nia refuses to choose between them. “I can’t pick one—I love them both equally! It’s like having two kids; you can’t have a favorite,” she laughs.
Beyond Entertainment
While acting and radio keep her busy, Nia is passionate about using her platform for more than entertainment. “I really want to work with organisations that focus on women’s reproductive health. Educating women about our bodies is something I deeply care about,” she reveals.
But for now, her main focus is delivering a stellar performance on Scandal! “I don’t want people to think, ‘Oh, she’s a radio presenter trying to act,’ and then I get on screen and it’s bad. I really just want to do a great job playing Tshidi and for people to fall in love with the storyline,” she says.
Proudly Representing Kimberley
For Nia, this role is more than just an acting milestone—it’s also a win for her hometown of Kimberley. “People have already picked up on my accent on the show, which is quite nice. Coming from a small town and making it onto big screens just proves that it’s possible. I love representing my hometown and making them proud,” she says with a smile.
