Tiisetso Thoka can’t walk down the street without getting dirty looks—or even outright scolding—from die-hard Skeem Saam fans.
His character, DJ Thomas, has earned a reputation as one of the most despised men on TV, with viewers calling him a “home-wrecker” and demanding that the writers “kill him off.”
But for Tiisetso, the backlash is just proof that he’s doing his job right. “People hate me in the streets,” he laughs. “They even tell me to my face that they hate what I’m playing on TV.” So, how does he handle being the man everyone loves to hate? He tells all in an exclusive interview with Entertainment SA.
DJ Thomas: A Love-to-Hate Character
Currently portraying DJ Thomas on Skeem Saam, Tiisetso has sparked strong reactions from fans. But he sees the bigger picture, emphasising that Skeem Saam is an educational show. “The storyline reminds people to invest in their families because neglect can lead to cheating.”
The Real Tiisetso: A Family Man and Entrepreneur
Off-screen, Tiisetso is the complete opposite of his Skeem Saam character. “I’m a chilled, married man who loves spending time at home. I focus on family and business.” His business ventures include a restaurant in Kagiso, Krugersdorp, which originally started in Randburg, specialising in African cuisine. “I expanded it into a restaurant and club, got a liquor license, and moved it to a bigger location. I also own a second location in Polokwane and invest in property development.”
Business Mindset and Brand Alignment
While his acting career provided financial stability, Tiisetso’s business acumen was ingrained in him long before the spotlight. “I’ve always been business-minded. In school, I sold fatcakes and sandwiches,” he recalls. His wife’s family, being business-oriented, further guided him in striking the right balance.
He also understands the value of brand partnerships. Speaking at a Kellogg’s event as one of their brand partners, he emphasizes, “Brand alignment is crucial. People know me as a fitness enthusiast, so I ensure my partnerships align with my interests.”
A Journey Rooted in Passion
For over 15 years, Tiisetso Thoka has been a familiar face on South African television, captivating audiences with his compelling performances. Best known for his roles in Tshisa, Isithembiso, and The Herd, the seasoned actor has cemented his place in the entertainment industry.
Tiisetso’s acting career began with Tshisa in 2008/2009, marking the start of an impressive trajectory. However, it was his portrayal of Ali in Isithembiso (2017) that served as his major breakthrough.
“That character opened so many doors for me. Since then, I’ve hardly had to audition,” he shares. His stellar performance led to roles in The Imposter, The Herd, and many other hit shows, solidifying his reputation in the industry.
Staying Grounded in the Entertainment World
Despite his success, Tiisetso remains humble and focused. “I stay grounded, mind my own business, and remember why I’m here. I love the arts, and I do it for the passion, not the fame.” His journey began in theatre at a young age, and he learned early on to respect the industry. “Never think you’re bigger than the production company,” he advises young actors.
Looking Beyond Borders
Though he remains tight-lipped about upcoming projects due to NDAs, he confirms that fans can still expect more from DJ Thomas. “People want him gone, but we’ll see what happens,” he teases.
Balancing It All
Between acting, business, and brand collaborations, Tiisetso keeps busy. “When I’m not working, I’m at the gym, managing my shop, or checking on my properties.”
