Amapiano artist Mpho Lebajoa, widely known as Scotts Maphuma, has spoken out following backlash over his interactions with fans, particularly for allegedly refusing to take pictures in public.
The 29-year-old artist recently took to X to issue a public apology, acknowledging the disappointment felt by some of his supporters.

“I want to take a moment to sincerely apologize to all my supporters. I’ve let some of you down, and I take full responsibility. Growth comes with owning your mistakes and I’m committed to doing better, for myself and for you. Thank you for still believing in me.”The apology comes after a series of incidents where Maphuma was filmed reacting negatively when approached by fans for pictures. These videos fueled public criticism, labeling the artist as “rude” and “ungrateful.”
Breaking his silence in a candid and emotional segment on the L-Tido Podcast, Maphuma addressed the issue head-on. He explained that, as an introvert, the constant demand for his time and attention has taken a toll on his mental well-being.
“This is the last time I give attention to this. I swear I’m not money. I can’t be loved by everyone. I can’t deal with the fact that my life can’t be private anymore. You can’t go to the mall and buy a pair of shoes, which is what I did for years, but now I have to think about being asked for pictures — and it’s OK. I don’t mind if it’s just a picture, but I can’t spend every minute of my life being Scotts Maphuma. When am I going to be normal again?”
Maphuma continued with a pointed reflection on the pressures of fame in South Africa: “Has South Africa thought about that? So if South Africa doesn’t care about us, whether you’re hurt or not in the mood — it could be anything — because it’s not like I live in [the] studio and make music all the time. Why should I always understand that these people are my fans — why? You tell a person that today I’m not feeling like taking pictures, and all of a sudden you’re rude. So I should give people my time and energy by force just because I’m who I am? I’m sorry. Cancel me, South Africa — maybe I’ll be free from you.”
Despite defending his right to privacy, Maphuma clarified that he doesn’t completely reject fan interactions but is asking for understanding when he’s not in the emotional space to engage.
