South African powerhouse Thuso Mbedu is set to make waves once again, this time in Task, a gritty new HBO drama from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby. HBO has just released a first-look image of Mbedu in character as Aleah, a key member of a specialised task force assembled to bring down a surge of violent robberies.
The role marks another major international project for Mbedu, who has steadily built a global reputation since her breakout performance as Winnie in Is’thunzi, which earned her two International Emmy nominations. In Task, she shares the screen with an A-list ensemble, including four-time Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo, who leads the task force as an FBI agent, along with Tom Pelphrey (Ozark), Emilia Jones (CODA), Jamie McShane (Wednesday), Alison Oliver (Saltburn), and Fabien Frankel (House of the Dragon).

This new role continues Mbedu’s impressive international rise. She earned a Critics Choice Best Actress nomination for her lead role as Cora in Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad, and won the Black Reel Breakthrough Actress Award for her performance in the global box office hit The Woman King. She’s also lent her voice to major productions like Mufasa: The Lion King and Castlevania: Nocturne.
