In a world where representation often stops at the surface, the Malibongwe Arts Festival continues to prove that real celebration comes with real substance. This year, its iconic Tribute To Women concert ushers in a bold new era—rooted in purpose, vision, and transformative leadership—with Dr. Criselda Kananda at its helm.
A renowned broadcaster, global health advocate, social entrepreneur, and former presidential appointee, Dr. Kananda has been officially named the Ambassador for the Tribute To Women concert and the inaugural Chairperson of the newly established Malibongwe Arts Festival Foundation—the festival’s dedicated social impact arm.
This appointment marks a powerful alignment between a lifelong advocate for women’s empowerment and a festival that celebrates feminine excellence in all its forms.

For years, Dr. Kananda has created and championed platforms for women to rise—from media and health to education and leadership,” says Joe Chakela, Festival Director of Tribute To Women. “Her life’s work mirrors the very soul of what this festival represents: celebration with purpose.
Dr. Kananda brings with her a wealth of experience and a lived commitment to wellness, representation, and systemic change. Her voice has been a trusted presence on South African airwaves for over a decade, breaking down health education and inspiring holistic wellbeing. Now, she steps into a role that extends that influence to the heart of South Africa’s cultural landscape.
“The Malibongwe Arts Festival Foundation represents more than a single event,” says Dr. Kananda.
It’s about creating a legacy. Our mission is to empower women—particularly in arts and culture—through skills development, access to resources, and visibility. It’s also about recognising that our stories and talents can reshape the world.
Launched in 2025, the Malibongwe Arts Festival Foundation will focus on development opportunities for women in underrepresented communities. Through strategic partnerships with government and the private sector, the Foundation will offer programs in education, entrepreneurship, cultural upliftment, and skills development, aiming to spark both social cohesion and economic growth.
Set to take place on August 24, at Mark’s Park in Emmarentia, the Tribute To Women concert will reflect this new chapter—not just through music, but through a deeper commitment to transformation. The event will continue to honour the spirit, talent, and strength of women, while now also serving as a platform for tangible impact and long-term legacy.
“This is more than a concert,” says Chakela. “It’s a call to action, and Dr. Kananda is the right voice to lead it”
As the Malibongwe Arts Festival enters this next phase, one thing is clear: celebration and change are no longer separate. Under Dr. Kananda’s leadership, they move in step—amplifying voices, building futures, and turning moments into movements.
