American singer-songwriter and record producer, Mariah Carey has finally received her flowers at the BET Awards – and in grand fashion. At the 2025 ceremony, the music legend was honoured with the BET Ultimate Icon Award, marking her first-ever win at the event.
With a career spanning over 30 years, Mariah has long been celebrated for her powerful five-octave range and a string of timeless hits that have shaped pop and R&B. Despite her undeniable influence, this was her first official recognition from BET.
Presented by Busta Rhymes, who delivered a heartfelt tribute, Carey took the stage to reflect on her career. “My life and career have been quite the adventure,” she said.
“It took me a while, but I realised life is far too short to live for anyone else’s approval.”
She closed her speech with a playful yet empowering message, encouraging fans to embrace their individuality: “Be a diva – and be proud of it.”
