Amid the ongoing conversation about victim protection and gender-based violence, Tebogo Thobejane has made a bold statement, shifting the focus toward those who dare to speak up when the system remains silent. In a heartfelt post on Instagram, the actress and entrepreneur expressed her deep gratitude to KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for his courage in speaking out about the systemic failures affecting victims of violence and abuse.
While the South African government has faced much criticism for its lack of action in addressing the rampant violence against women, Thobejane found solace in Mkhwanazi’s willingness to speak the truth — even when so many others remain silent. In a world where public figures often remain passive or fearful of retribution, Mkhwanazi’s decision to use his platform to advocate for victims has resonated deeply with Thobejane, herself a survivor of a violent assassination attempt in 2023.
In a touching post, Thobejane shared a photo of a statue of Mkhwanazi, praising him for his courage and commitment to addressing issues that many choose to overlook. She wrote:
“For carrying a weight most will never understand. At some point, someone will truly stand up for us. I believe that… I don’t know you personally, but I see your heart. And I will keep praying for your peace, your healing, and your protection. Because when one of us stands, we all begin to rise.”
Mkhwanazi has been vocal about the challenges faced by victims of violence, calling attention to the failures of the police and the government’s failure to protect those at risk. His openness to address these issues has made him a key figure in the ongoing conversation about justice for victims and the need for urgent systemic change.
Thobejane’s appreciation for Mkhwanazi is also rooted in her own painful experiences as a victim of violence.

In October 2023, her vehicle was ambushed by gunmen in an assassination attempt. While Thobejane survived, her close friend was critically injured, and the trauma still lingers. The attack followed months of threats and abuse from Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, whom Thobejane had left after a toxic relationship.
Despite her ongoing trauma, Thobejane has chosen to channel her pain into positive action, creating the Botlhale Foundation to help other survivors of bullying, violence, and trauma. Through the foundation, she is working to raise awareness about mental health and survivor support, and to provide a platform for those who feel voiceless.
